Coon Creek Watershed District is a special-purpose local government formed in 1959 after a citizen petition, with jurisdiction over roughly 107 square miles (about 122 after a 2012 expansion) draining to the Mississippi River in and around Coon Rapids, Fridley, Blaine, and Spring Lake Park in central Anoka County. It operates under the authority of Minnesota Statute 103D, the Watershed District Act, managing water quality, drainage, and habitat projects. It is funded through property tax levies and grants, including Clean Water Fund grants from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR).
