The city biography describes 42 years of public service: began in 1982 as an EMT and volunteer firefighter; served eight years as a police officer in Rice Lake, Wisconsin; hired by Cottage Grove in 1995 and served more than 26 years as a police officer, paramedic, training officer, and detective, ending as a detective with the Cottage Grove Police Department. Later worked as a community paramedic for a Twin Cities health-care nonprofit before retiring in 2024, and works seasonally at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
